Anachron 23 – The Saltery Bay Clock
Despite the wretched condition of the clock, Mr Girard assured me that the top deck, as he called it, was open to inspection. The effort of the climb was rewarded with a view of an enormous metal carapace punctured here and there by ragged-edged tears. From within came the hollow thump and whistle of trapped air and the groan and creak of perished metal. Here was a thing alive!

The Black Canyon gorge in Western Colorado is home to a rare entombed Anachron unearthed by a landslide in 1942. How many more Anachrons, I wondered, are buried in the earth, lost in frozen ice, or hidden in the ocean’s murky depths?
