Welcome!

Find out who the Smallwood twins are, what the Anachron project is, and how we plan to use Kickstarter to help launch it to the world!

Who We Are

Welcome to our first newsletter! We are a pair of identical twins from the UK. Brian has been an artist for 40 years and has created original art for book covers, magazine covers, board games and more. Clients include Arthur C. Clarke, Sir Patrick Moore, Games Workshop and NASA. He was the principal artist for ‘BANG! The History of the Universe, co-written by Sir Brian May of the rock band Queen. His traditional work has also been auctioned at Christie’s in London. I’m the other half – David, younger by one hour (but so much more youthful for it). I’ve written children’s books and materials for television sketch shows, but my real love lies in the realms of fantasy and sci-fi. Working together, we have hit upon a unique concept for a narrated art book called Anachron.

The Anachron Enigma

“Our ancestors had no great tolerance for anachronisms”
          – The Time Machine, H G Wells.

What is an Anachron? Think of the everyday things in your life, such as a paperclip or a mobile phone. Now, imagine a paperclip so vast it’s the size of a race track or a mobile phone so huge it’s the size of a mountain. These are the Anachrons—ordinary objects appearing out of thin air in unbelievably immense proportions.

Post Box Anachron

The story is set in the 1950s and follows Rupert and Faye’s journey of discovery as they visit Anachrons around the globe. If you love the language of HG Wells, the story of Stranger Things, and the images of Simon Stallenhag’s Tales from the Loop, then you’ll love Anachron!

“The effort of the climb was rewarded with a view of an enormous metal carapace punctured here and there by ragged-edged tears. From beneath our feet came the hollow thump and whistle of trapped air and the groan and creak of the springs. Here was a thing alive!”

Clock Anachron

Anachron will be an artbook-sized hardback book printed in full colour on high-quality paper. It will feature over 30 original artworks and a narrative story of 10,000+ words. All images are unique and human-made by Brian; there is no AI here.

KICKSTARTER

Anachron will one day see the light of day, whether through Kickstarter, Amazon, or other more traditional means. Our preference is Kickstarter as this gives us complete control to bulk print the hardback books in a much shorter timescale. This platform also affords us the opportunity to introduce unique rewards; imagine becoming a character in the book or owning one of the physical items featured in the artwork! Additionally, every hardback purchaser will have the chance to have their name immortalized on the tribute page at the end of the book!

Kickstarter

Curious about how crowdfunding on Kickstarter works? It’s simple! If our project catches your eye, you can pledge to receive one of several rewards, ranging from a PDF copy of the book to a signed physical hardback (more news of reward updates in our next newsletter!). If we don’t reach our goal, your pledge won’t be charged. But if we hit our target, your contribution will help us independently produce the book, accelerating the process. Keep an eye out for the Anachron pre-launch page link coming soon!
